GPS Buying Guide

A GPS system allows you to know your exact location, 24 hours a day, regardless of where you’re located. You will never have to guess on a certain street and pray you’ll end up on the right route. With a GPS unit, all your need to do is push some buttons and the unit will tell you where you need to, where you have been and even plot a course for you to follow.

Modern GPS portable devices and permanently mounted models can now provide you with voice-prompted driving directions for your whole trip, guiding your way to the nearest hospital, gas station or whatever your current needs may be. A GPS system also allows you to re-track your course, if ever you happen to take a wrong turn.

If you plan to buy your own GPS Systems, you need to understand that each unit will provide you with different features and functions. Choosing the right GPS device will depend largely on your personal needs.

There are four main types of GPS devices in the market – portable outdoor units, in-dash car navigation systems, marine systems and GPS-PDA hybrid. If you’re planning to use a GPS system to help you get from one location to the next, you should consider in-dash navigation systems. These models can be installed upon purchase of a new car or professionally installed to upgrade your old car. Most in-dash systems include features such as voice-assisted directions, built-in maps, re-tracking, touch screens and spacious database for an entire country’s street maps.

If you want to bring your GPS device anywhere or from one vehicle to the next, you should consider portable or handheld devices. You can easily purchase these kinds of systems from popular companies, such as Magellan GPS or Garmin GPS. These systems are ideal for active people because most of these units are lightweight, waterproof and rugged with long lasting batteries, colored screens and mapping features.

When you spend most of your time fishing or in the water, a marine GPS system is ideal for you because this kind of system is designed particularly to be around and on water. For this reason, most marine GPS units are waterproof and include large screens that are not sensitive to direct sunlight. Some marine GPS models include fishing spots, offshore and onshore maps, colored chart plotters and other features.

When you have your own PDA device, a GPS hardware and antenna can be connected to your handheld device. Because of this, you can easily use your personal organizer as a mapping or travel guide. The only downside to PDA-GPS hybrid devices is that you have limited selection of models because only several companies produce these units.

Be aware that the price of a GPS system becomes expensive when you choose to include extra features. For this reason, you should choose the features you need carefully. Pick only for the features you need the most.

Having your own GPS device can be a great help, especially if you’re not good in memorizing streets and highways. With a GPS system, you can easily plan your next adventure without getting lost in an unfamiliar place. By choosing the correct GPS unit with the most appropriate features, you will never have to be troubled with unfamiliar roads ever again.
