Being Responsible with Your Credit CardCredit cards are a convenient method for making purchases and, when used responsibly, can actually out a little extra cash in your pocket if you have a card that offers rewards. Even if it doesn't offer rewards, using a credit card is an excellent way to get an interest free loan if you pay off the balance at the end of each billing cycle. The key to each of these benefits, however, is being responsible. So, what can you do to be responsible with your credit card and get as much out of it as possible?
Plan a Budget
The first thing you need to do when you get a credit card is to plan a budget. Remember, the credit line on your credit card is not “free cash.” You do have to pay off the money that you borrow with your credit card. It all has to be repaid – and, the sooner the better. In fact, you should plan your budget to ensure that you pay off the entire balance at the end of each billing cycle. This way, you do not have to pay any finance charges for the loan you received from the card. In other words, you can have an interest-free loan every month so long as you pay your balance in full each time! You can’t get that type of service from a traditional bank loan.
To plan your budget, add up all of your regular monthly bills. This includes rent or mortgage, utilities, cable or satellite, and car payments. Subtract this from the amount of money you bring home each month. Now, you know how much extra money you have. Of course, your goal should not be to spend every cent of extra money you have. You should set some of that money aside for emergencies and other unexpected expenses. But, be certain that you do not spend over the amount of money you have left over. That way, you know you can pay your balance in full at the end of each month.
Take Advantage of Rewards
If you will be paying your balance in full at the end of each month as you should, then it is a good idea to apply for a cash back or rewards credit card. These cards are not a good option if you will be carrying a balance from month to month because the interest rates on these credit cards are higher than non-reward cards. If you do pay your balance in full, however, this will not be an issue. In fact, by using a rewards card responsibly, the credit card company will basically be paying you for using the card!
The only way to receive rewards from a reward credit card is to spend with it. Therefore, put as many of your purchases as possible on your rewards credit card. Even your utilities, cell phone, and cable or satellite can be paid with your credit card. Setting up an automatic payment for these routine expenses is more convenient because it allows you to pay all of your bills at one time at the end of the month. And, it helps you take full advantage of your rewards credit card by helping you build up more points and earn more back.
