Items To Watch For When Looking for Dental Insurance
When choosing dental insurance, it is essential to avoid pitfalls that might lead to inadequate dental care. Dental insurance can save you a lot of money every year, but some plans contain policies or restrictions that make the policy worthless in certain situations.
If you are purchasing dental insurance through your employer, you may not be able to control these limitations. You can always use them to decide if the policy is truly worth the monthly premium.
Oral Surgeries
Whether a tooth has decayed to the point that it is not worth saving or teeth need to be removed due to crowding issues (wisdom teeth), some dental plans will not cover oral surgeries if you have health insurance that offers oral surgery benefits. Likewise, there are many health insurance plans that will not cover oral surgeries if your dental insurance offers coverage. Make sure you have a firm answer on this type of coverage from the start.
Limits
Many dental plans put limits on the amount of care they will cover. If you go for a tooth cleaning, a routine service that should be free, and the dentist charges more than the insurance company’s maximum, you may be held responsible for the additional cost.
Fillings
Few people get through life without at least one filling. With many dental insurance companies, they limit the type of filling you can have. Resin fillings are growing in popularity with many dentists and patients. Their white appearance and durability make them a sure bet. Unfortunately, dental insurance companies look at the slightly increased price and refuse to pay. If your dentist refuses to use the metal fillings, you will wind up either finding a new dentist or paying for the resin fillings out of your own pocket.
Fluoride Pills
For those who are on a private well that has no fluoride in the water, many dentists recommend fluoride pills to help form strong teeth. Dental insurance used to pay for the pills, but no longer do in many cases because the use of fluoride is under debate. If you feel strongly about this, you may want to find out which way your dental insurance company leans.
Emergency Care
Some plans do not offer emergency care. If you call a dentist after hours and he or she cannot see you, you may wind up needing to go to the hospital. If this is the case, you need to know before hand if your dental insurance will cover it. A trip to the ER for an emergency can be extremely costly.
Dentists
Many plans limit the dentists to whom you can see. You will need to know up front if your dental insurance plan allows you to see specialists at your own will or if referrals are necessary. It is also helpful to know if you will be limited to one or two dentists in your area, or if you have freedom of choice.
