Getting Started in Obedience Dog TrainingDespite what you may have heard or thought about obedience dog training, the process is very helpful for your dog and beneficial to his health, sense of well-being, and to your relationship with him.
Deciding to partake in dog training related to obedience does not mean that your dog has “problems” or is disobedient. Dog training for obedience is something all dog owners should consider to help your dog learn to be a follower rather than a leader, to increase the bonding and understanding in your pet-owner relationship, and to develop self-confidence and a sense of purpose in your dog.
Besides the obvious benefits of dog training for obedience, dog training is actually fun! Many dog owners may dread the thought of undertaking dog training with their pet, but many owners who have actually gone through the training with their dog have found it to be not only useful and interesting, but just plain fun.
For one thing, the two of you have the chance to go out and get some fresh air and exercise. You have the opportunity, through obedience dog training, to meet other dogs going through the training, and make new dog owner friends. Finally, don’t forget that you’ll be learning and teaching some new and fun tricks to your dog that you can show off to your friends and family for some new entertainment.
Before beginning your first dog training class, remember that patience is the key. You will need to learn to exhibit a great deal of patience in attempting to teach your dog new commands, tricks, and tasks that he is likely completely unfamiliar with. But, more than that, you will need to have patience for yourself. Remember, you are learning, too!
Some will even say that dog training classes and lessons are more for you than they are for your dog. For example, in your classes, you will be learning which particular commands to use, how to teach and relay these commands to your dog in way that allows him to learn, understand, use, and master them, and finally, and perhaps most importantly, how to praise your dog while he is learning.
The dog training classes will be taught by a dog training expert, and hopefully you will get to see the expert along with a trained dog in action, actively displaying the commands, tricks, and tasks. During the classes, take advantage of any opportunity to ask questions and for clarifications, and other tips and suggestions.
Once you feel confident in your ability to teach and reward your dog, it’s time to start practicing! Practice coupled with patience makes perfect, and don’t feel any pressure to have your dog completely “trained” by a certain amount of time. Remember that every dog is different and will learn at a different rate.
