Why Fence A Dog In?

Dogs are natural roamers. If left unsupervised, a dog will roam for miles smelling the remnants of other dogs, sniffing out small animals like squirrels or mice, and even visiting other people. Besides the prevalence of leash laws throughout much of the United States, there are many other reasons why it is important to keep your dog fenced in your yard. What surprises me is the number of people within my neighborhood who feel it is perfectly reasonable to let their dog wander throughout the day.

Keeping Your Dog Safe from Traffic

Not every dog is smart enough to stay out of the road. All it takes is one sharp corner to cause a lack of visibility and your family pet can wind up seriously injured or killed by an oncoming car. If your dog is lucky enough to survive, a broken bone can cost thousands of dollars to repair. Plus, any damages to the car can be your responsibility if you did not have your pet properly restrained in your yard.

Keeping Your Visitors Safe

While your dog may seem perfectly lovable and friendly with your family, out on the loose the dog can be a terror to others. Certain breeds, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and even Boxers for example, can become aggressive around complete strangers. Roaming the neighborhood, these dogs may scare or even attack other people who are out walking with their children or dogs.

I know from experience that the dogs my neighbors swear are friendly can turn into growling menaces around my own animals and younger children. While they seem fine with older children, they are lousy with smaller children. If you are the type to let your dog roam free, you are risking not only your dog's life, but also the life of other children and animals. You can guarantee that if your dog causes injury or death to another person or pet, you will face expensive law suits and hefty fines. In some areas, you may find yourself heading to jail.

Keeping Your Pet Safe from Accidents

Animals that are allowed to roam are also far more likely to get into a poisonous substance, become injured or killed by wild animals, or even be mistaken for another animal during hunting season. Fencing your pet is essential to ensure the safety of your pet and others.

Even some fencing systems, like invisible fencing, cannot keep every animal in your yard. The animal may be stubborn enough to take the zap when escaping. It is important to match a decent fencing system with personal supervision. If you cannot keep an eye on your pet while outside, you should not allow the pet to go outside until you can.

Keeping your pet on your property should require little more than common sense. Sadly, many people continue to allow their pet to go outside without any fencing system or without supervision. Don't be one of these ignorant people who wind up losing their cherished pet. Invest in a system that works for both you and your pet.
