Holding a Baptism For Your Infant

A baptism is a religious practice followed by most Christian denominations. With this special ceremony, your child is officially welcomed to the Christian community. Depending on your particular religious beliefs, there may be some other symbolic meanings behind this sacred ceremony as well.

A Closer Look at Baptisms

Those religions that believe in performing baptisms on their infants include:

  • Anglicans
  • Assyrian Church of the East
  • Church of Nazarene
  • Continental Reformed
  • Eastern Orthodox
  • Episcopalians
  • Lutherans
  • Methodists
  • Oriental Orthodox
  • Presbyterians
  • Reformed Church in America
  • Roman Catholics
  • United Church of Christ

Since these groups represent approximately 80% of Christians, the chances are good that you will be having a baptism for your infant if you are of Christian faith.

The exact ceremony held for a baptism will differ slightly according to your religion. In all cases, however, the ceremony will involve the application of water in some way.

Inviting Guests to Your Child’s Baptism

Since a baptism is such an important moment in your child’s life, you will likely wish to celebrate the event with some of your closest family and friends. As such, you will need to send out baptism invitations to tell them about your special day.

Although you will want to share the moment with your family and friends, a baptism is also a personal moment for most families. Therefore, many choose to keep their guest lists relatively small. There are no rules regarding how many guests may attend, however, so you are free to invite as many or as few guests as you desire.

When selecting the baptism invitations you will send out to your guests, be certain to find the one that sends the right message. After all, you will most likely keep the invitation and save it with your child’s christening gown or outfit as a keepsake of this very special day. In addition, your invitation will help set the mood for your event.

Some baptism invitations are cute and sweet and may contain images such as bears, ducks, and other images commonly associated with babies. Even so, they will bear a religious message making it clear what this special day is about. Others may include only religious images and may choose to forgo the cute and sweet aspect.

You will also need to include directions to the church where the baptism will take place. Many parents choose to include maps, which are quite easy to generate with the help of online mapping resources. In this way, guests will be certain to be there to share this special moment with you and your child.
