Freelance Writing as a Business

Everyone has considered the possibility of working at home at one time or another, but for the writer, the process tends to be a little easier. After all, a writer is already using a computer and Internet access to submit his or her writing, so starting business as a freelance writer is not but an extra step away.

For the freelance writer, several options are available. If you are already well-published, you can focus your business around obtaining freelance writing gigs with various publications. For those who are still seeking to be published, you can focus your business on ghostwriting. Although this type of writing does not gain you recognition as a writer, you will gain experience in the trade, collect a paycheck, and build a collection of clients who can provide referrals to any places where you may seek publication.

Although ghostwriting does not allow you to post work you have written without permission, you may use excerpts as samples of your work for future projects. In addition, ghostwriting, especially in the area of books, can be quite lucrative. Of course, this may not work for some writers, especially those who do not desire to sell their copyright, but rather wish to write for publication, and ultimately as a business. Possibly the single most lucrative type of writing is that of copywriting.

With a reputation to follow you, it’s possible to earn anywhere between $30-50 per hour and more depending on the extent of the project. It will also depend upon the budget of the client and whether the writer is doing only the text or is also doing sales packets and media kits in order to complete the advertising promotion. In some cases, a copywriter will work directly with the artist or illustrator, and with very small companies, the copywriter may be hired to do the entire project, including that of putting the entire brochure or sales package together.

If you’re already writing, and you want your own business, consider making your writing a business instead of a hobby. The only thing that you need to decide is whether you want to begin as a freelance ghostwriter, doing short articles for several clients as many do, or if you want to concentrate on the best American novel or selling your writing to various publications in order to build your portfolio. Whichever way you choose, remember that the most important aspect of growing your writing business is to promote yourself to everyone you know.
