The Must-Have Features for your GPS Device

When choosing a GPS system, you need to look for several features – such as display, navigation, maps, form factor and accessories – to determine if a particular unit can fit and meet your needs.

In examining the display of a GPS unit, make sure it could display information that can easily be seen in different lighting conditions. You should be able to view the display screen from any angle. Be aware that the size of the screen is not a factor in viewing performance because larger screens can sometimes make it more difficult to read information when in direct sunlight.

In terms of navigation features, expect to pay more with more additional features. However, modern GPS devices offer a variety of standard features. For instance, Garmin GPS units offer a standard AutoRoute installed into the hard drive, even without downloading or installing anything. Majority of Magellan GPS devices provide unlimited tracks, routes and waypoints within the meridian.

Some features that you may find beneficial include text- and voice-prompted driving instructions. Examine the standard database and if it contains information about hospitals, airports, malls and other data about unfamiliar territories. You may want to consider an automatic routing to ensure accurate information and an automatic re-routing when you veer of your course accidentally. Some also support 3D views and bird’s eye map perspectives. Some GPS devices offer real-time traffic and weather reports, often for a subscription fee.

Maps are important features of a GPS unit. While most GPS systems include partial regions of street maps as standard features, other will require you to pay just to unlock certain maps from the company’s website. Other companies offer CDs or DVDs that you could install into your device to receive updated mapping information.

Majority of portable GPS units provide you with USB ports that can be connected to your computer to download latest software or maps. On the other hand, in-dash models usually provide DVDs or CDs for the latest upgrades, which you should buy to receive updated information.

The size and form of the GPS will depend on your traveling habits and lifestyle. If you usually go for long-distance traveling, you should consider a GPS system that includes a dedicated hard drive so you could store numerous maps for an entire country. If you rarely travel on road, a GPS unit that stores maps in SD cards can be a practical option. You can always buy extra cards when needed.

If you have several vehicles and you want to share one GPS until with all your cars, you should consider a lightweight, user-friendly and easy to install unit that you could remove easily. If you want a GPS system to be mounted permanently on your dashboard, make sure to hire a professional to install the unit to ensure it will be placed in a position that could ensure correct placement of its antenna.
