How to Choose the GPS System for You

There are virtually hundreds of GPS systems in the market today. Although most of them can help you locate a person, a place, a pet or anything you wish to find, choosing the GPS system that will work for your needs should be your number one goal.

To narrow down your choices, here are the categories of GPS systems available in the consumer market.

1) Standard Handheld GPS systems (Price: less than $100) – Don’t mind the price. Handheld GPS systems are as accurate and advanced as other expensive systems. The only difference is that these GPS systems offer lesser features, such as mapping capabilities.

Handheld GPS systems include features such as satellite location, accurate time, compass heading, calculate distance traveled, record and retrace paths, navigate routes and offers different location formats.

2) Handheld mapping GPS systems (Price: $150 and up) – These kinds of GPS systems display maps, which have been pre-loaded or uploaded from a computer. The details of a map depend largely on the size and/or resolution of the GPS system. Meaning, most GPS systems with mapping features are larger than standard GPS units are.

If you’re a frequent traveler and you need plenty of maps on your GPS system, you should opt for a unit that accepts memory cards for storage.

3) Automotive GPS systems (Price: $500 and up) – Automotive GPS systems are larger than handhelds because the driver should be able to see the directions while driving. Plus, most GPS system manufacturers provide voice instructions for extra road safety. These GPS systems are powered by your vehicle’s electrical system. Meaning, they are only used inside the vehicle.

If you’re buying a new car, a built-in GPS receiver can be an add-on. However, these GPS systems are more expensive compared to other units.

4) GPS system for PDAs and laptops – Unlike GPS handhelds and automotive, units for PDAs and laptops have different methods in integrating PDA. To know which kind of GPS system is perfect for your electronics, it is best to ask support from the manufacturer of the laptop or PDA.

In choosing the GPS system, you need to determine how you wish to use the unit. If you’re an outdoors enthusiast, you could choose standard handhelds, mapping GPS systems or a PDA with GPS.

Be aware that even if a GPS system can be the best travel guide, certain unexpected problems can still occur. Always bring a paper map, extra batteries, compass and other emergency assistance to prevent being lost in a strange place.
