The Basics of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a special type of light therapy that is non-invasive. Through the laser hair removal process, your doctor can eliminate the unwanted hair many parts of your body. This is accomplished by creating a pulse of intense and concentrated light, which is directed through a hand piece. Each pulse applied through the small hand piece lasts for only a fraction of a second. In addition, it only treats an area of about one square centimeter at a time.

How it Works

After the laser energy passes through the skin, it reaches the hair follicle and gets absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and in the hair. The absorbed light becomes heated, which causes the root of the hair to be damaged. It does not, however, damage the skin around the hair.

What Can Be Treated

In theory, laser hair removal can be used to destroy the hair follicles on any part of the body. Nonetheless, doctors generally do not perform laser hair treatment within certain moles and within tattoos. They usually also avoid performing laser hair removal near the eyes, such as on the eyelashes, because of the possibility of causing damage to the eyes. The hair between eyebrows, referred to as monobrow, is a treatable area but the procedure is not recommended for shaping eyebrows. Unwanted hair on any other part of the body is generally capable of being removed.

Who Can Be Treated

Only pigmented hair can be removed with laser hair removal. Therefore, individuals with white, blond, or gray hair will not benefit from treatment. The ideal candidate is a person with dark hair and light skin, since the lasers target the pigment in the hair. Individuals with darker skin and lighter hair, however, can still benefit from treatment. Therefore, it is best to consult a specialist to determine definitively if you are a good candidate or not for treatment.

The most common places for hair removal include facial hair, the bikini line, legs, and underarms for women. For men, the most common sites for laser hair removal are the back, the chest, the shoulders, and the face and neck. Individuals coping with razor burn, in-grown hairs, abnormal hair growth, and difficult hair maintenance routines are the best candidates.

Comparing Hair Removal Procedures

There are a number of other methods for removing unwanted hair, including waxing, plucking, threading, shaving, and depilatories. All of these methods, however, allow the hair follicle to remain intact. This results in new hair growth in a matter of days or weeks. Laser hair removal and electrolysis are the only methods for permanent hair removal or for long term reduction of hair. Laser hair removal is usually preferred over electrolysis because it is not as time consuming and because larger areas can be treated during one visit.

Laser hair removal treatment is not a perfect solution to removing unwanted hair. There is still a chance that small amounts of hair will return after having completed several treatments. On the other hand, the majority of the unwanted hair is permanently removed and the hair that does return is significantly thinner. For most people, any shaving required after treatment is reduced to just once every few months.

Although laser hair removal cannot be used by everyone, those with stubborn hair needing regular shaving, with unwanted hair in hard to reach places, or who simply want to remove or thin the amount of hair on various parts of their bodies will greatly appreciate the effects of this advancement in cosmetic technology.
