The Risks of Online Dating and How to Avoid Them
There are numerous potential risks to online dating – both financial and emotional. Unfortunately, there are many scammers out there that prey on individuals who are lonely, promising a happy future together in exchange for cash. Of course, they are much slier about getting the money than to just blatantly ask for it. Rather, some unexpected emergency will come up and the scammer will need some cash. Because you think you have a future with the person, you might offer to help out financially. Then, after the money is sent, you might never hear from the person again.
Not only is this situation financially harmful, it is also emotionally painful as you realize that you didn’t really find “the one.” So, what can you do to help protect yourself from this situation and keep your wallet and your heart safe? Here are a few tips to follow:
Tip #1: Watch for Warning Signs of a Scammer
There are many warning signs to watch out for that can tip you off to a scammer. These include:
·Photographs that are just too good to be true
·Confusing names or conflicting information
·A lack of response to your questions – the person changes the subject and talks about something else instead
·Asking for money and telling you about some “terrible situation” that prompts you to offer money
Tip #2: Watch Out for People that are Married
Just as there are signs that will help you spot a scammer, there are warning signs that the person you are chatting with is married. These include:
·No picture on the profile
·Erratic or irregular responses to your emails and messages
·The person asks for your phone number, but won’t give you his/hers
·The only phone number you receive is a cell phone number
·Erratic or irregular calling times OR calling times on a very set schedule
Tip #3: Be Careful with the Profile You Create
When creating your online dating profile, you need to be careful about the information you include. Certain information will make it easier for a scammer or an otherwise disturbed individual to track you down and take advantage of you. Information that should be left out of your online dating profile includes:
·Home address
·Job address
·Telephone number
·Email address
After getting to know the person in a safe and secure online dating environment, you might then exchange email addresses and phone numbers. But, take it slow when exchanging information.
Tip #4: Always Stay on Your Terms
If you and the person you have met online (eg. Yahoo Personals.com) have decided to exchange numbers or to meet somewhere, be sure to always remain on your terms. Don’t let the other person talk you into doing something that you do not feel comfortable with. Your intuition will tell you when something just doesn’t seem right – follow that intuition and keep yourself safe.
