How Does Pet Insurance Work?Thousands of Americans are realizing that purchasing insurance policies for their pets is an excellent investment. Veterinary care can be staggering when an accident or emergency hits. Investing a few dollars per week into a pet insurance plan can save you lots of money in the long run, especially if your policy covers routine health care, heartworm medications, and vaccinations.
Pet insurance does not work like the HMO and co-pay plans that many of us use for ourselves and our children. This difference can cause confusion for those who purchase policies for their dogs and cats and then realize they are not sure how the process works.
There are two different ways to file claims with your pet insurance company. The method you will use depends on your pet insurance company.
Getting Reimbursed
Most policies use a reimbursement system. You go to your veterinarian and pay him or her as usual. At the time you submit your payment, you ask your veterinarian or his/her assistant to fill out a claim form form that your pet insurance company provides when you enroll.
Once you get home, photocopy the bill and the claim form. This protects you in case the forms are lost in the mail. The pet insurance company requires the original copy of the veterinary bill and the original copy of the claim form.
After the pet insurance company processes the paperwork and ensures that you are entitled to coverage for the services your pet received, they will cut a check for their portion of the bill less any deductibles. Claims are typically processed and checks are sent within a couple of weeks.
Receiving Discounted Pet Health Care
A newer form of pet insurance involves an insurance plan in which you choose from a list of approved veterinarians. When you visit, you show the veterinarian your pet's insurance card. A discount, usually 25%, is automatically deducted from the bill. The veterinarian fills out the paperwork and submits it. The pet insurance company then reimburses the veterinarian.
The discounted pet health care plans are extremely affordable and the benefit of instant savings appeals to many. Often this form of pet insurance offers a multiple pet discount that increases your savings. It always works the same, however. You walk in, receive an instant discount, and the vet handles the rest.
Pet insurance is easy to use and should be on the top of any pet owner's mind. Accidents or illnesses can be extremely costly, but with a pet insurance plan, you will be able to put your pet's health first.
