How Much Can I Save with Pet Insurance?

All puppies must have their vaccinations regularly. A “supreme” (meaning routine checks and vaccinations are covered) pet insurance plan often contains a preset limit that they will cover. There is usually a $50 or $100 deductible per visit on top of this.

For your puppies first check, the veterinarian will advise your puppy undergoes the following tests and receives the following vaccines.

Saving on Tests

All puppies must have their stool checked for worms. This test typically costs $30. If the test is positive, medications are given and then a follow-up fecal exam will be performed after the medication has run its course.

Heartworm testing will begin when a puppy is a year old. The medication alone to prevent heartworm will cost upwards of $40 per year. The actual blood tests are another $15 to $20.

Saving on Vaccinations

Rabies is required in every state and country. The puppy will not likely receive the vaccination until six months of age, but it is an expense you will face. The remaining vaccines are usually given once and then repeated with a follow-up booster vaccination.

· Coronavirus—Two shots are required.
· Distemper—In all, four shots are required and after often given two weeks apart.
· Hepatitis—Four shots are required and after often given two weeks apart.
· Kennel Cough—This is not mandatory, but if you will ever put your dog in a daycare or kennel, it is required.
· Leptospirosis—In all, four shots are required and after often given two weeks apart.
· Parainfluenzavirus--In all, four shots are required and after often given two weeks apart.
· Parvovirus—One shot is all that is necessary. It is typically given at 16 months of age.
· Rabies—Once per year for two years, and then it is given every two years after that.

The vaccination for Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvo, and Coronavirus is combined into one vaccination. Each dose of the vaccination costs approximately $50. In most cases, your puppy will receive four doses during the first four months of life. You are looking at a total of $200 just for those vaccines. The vaccination for kennel cough will cost approximately $20. In general, your puppy's first few veterinarian visits will cost you well in excess of $350. This doesn't include the spay or neuter that needs to be done in the first year. A typical spay or neuter will cost upwards of $200. There are low-priced clinics, but some cut costs by not sterilizing equipment or using a heart monitor during the procedure.

Say you have purchased a puppy for your family. You decide to enroll that puppy into a pet insurance plan that covers routine veterinarian care as well as emergency care. The policy is most likely going to cost you $30 a month or $360 per year. In reality, you are paying about $1 per day. Compared to the cost of the vaccinations, medications, and lab tests, your pet insurance yearly premium will cost less than the typical vet checks. In essence, pet insurance really isn't that expensive.
