Factors to Consider When Purchasing Office Chairs

The first step to ensuring a comfortable and productive work environment is to make sure that every employee has a quality office chair. Employees spend several hours each day seated, and it is important to choose office chairs that accommodate the individuals who use them. When employees are seated comfortably, chances are they will be more alert and productive. Before purchasing chairs for your office, there are several factors that you will want to consider.

Considering Seat Height Adjustment

A basic office task chair features a strong frame and quality mechanics and should easily adjust to fit most girths and heights. This allows employees to adjust the height, backrest, and armrests to suit his or her body type. Manufacturers can furnish special chairs with adjustable options to support users with large frames, which look exactly like standard office chairs.

A well-adjusted chair should let the feet be planted firmly on the floor, with legs at a right angle and thighs resting against the cushion. The seat should be rounded in front to prevent circulation from being cut off behind the knee, and weight should be evenly distributed on the seat. The height of the chair should allow the wrists to be straight while typing.

A Look at Materials

Office chairs come in a wide variety or materials and several grades of fabrics. If you expect much wear and tear in your office, be sure to ask for stain resistance and durability. The most expensive chair is not always covered with the most durable fabric. Leather chairs are attractive but may become uncomfortable or sticky, in warm temperatures. Choose a “breathable” material that will take away some of the user’s natural body heat, while contouring to the user’s body type to provide all day comfort.

Considering Cost

While cost is an important factor to keep in mind when selecting office chairs, low cost chairs may not be durable or of quality construction. Expect to pay considerably more for high-grade executive chairs with fine wood frames, genuine leather, and additional comfort settings. Even though high-grade chairs cost substantially more, they may not be significantly more comfortable than a standard task chair. It is a good idea to have a set budget in mind prior to shopping for office chairs, and ask about discounts when buying in large volumes.

Selecting chairs for your office is an important task. The individual responsible for making the purchase should be fully aware of which type of chair will best suit the office, the employee, and the company budget.
