Rebuilding Bad Credit

Do you find yourself trying to overcome bad credit? Perhaps you went through a divorce, experience an accident, or dealt with a serious illness in the family. Or, maybe you simply made some bad financial decisions. Regardless of the reason for your bad credit, there are many things you can do to start rebuilding it once again.

Open a Bank Account

Simply opening a bank account can help you improve your credit standing. While this information is not reflected on a credit report, opening a bank account helps you establish a relationship with that particular financial institution. Better yet, open a checking account and be responsible with it. Write checks and use your debit card, but be certain to never overdraft your account. After proving to your bank that you can be responsible with cash, that bank will be more likely to work with you when it comes time to get a loan.

Pay Your Utility Bills on Time

More than likely, you have a few utility bills in your name, such as the electric bill and the phone bill. If you have bad credit, you probably had to pay a security deposit before you could get these utilities put into your name. Now that you have these accounts, be sure to pay them on time every month. Don't look at your security deposit as a security net that will ensure your bills get paid and your utilities do not get turned off. Even one missed payment can really hurt your credit rating. On the other hand, being responsible with these bills can be very beneficial.

Get a Secured Credit Card

With bad credit, you might still be able to get a traditional credit card. In fact, there are a number of credit card companies that cater specifically to people with bad credit. If your credit is really in bad shape, however, you might find it impossible to get one of these cards. In this case, a secured credit card might be a good option for you.

With a secured credit card, you don't actually receive a line of credit. Instead, you send money to the credit card company ahead of time. The money you send, minus any necessary fees, then becomes the limit on what you can spend with your card. While this may not be as nice as having a credit card that will loan you some money with a line of credit, a secured credit card can go a long way in rebuilding your credit rating. In addition, it looks and works just like a traditional credit card, so no one will have to know that your card is secured.

Unlike a non-secured credit card, secured cards usually do not have many benefits associated with them. In fact, most have no benefits. They are, quite simply, cards that allow you to make purchases without the need for cash. They also make life easier by allowing you to make hotel and airplane reservations. They can also be a bit costly to have. But, they do provide the most important benefit, which is rebuilding your credit rating.
