Stained Glass Patterns

The first step to your stained glass project is to pick a pattern you would like to use. It is helpful to make a copy of the pattern and use the copy for your stained glass project. Some stained glass patterns come in full size where others will need to be enlarged. Number your pieces of your pattern as well as the color on both the copy and the original. Your copy can then be cut out with pattern shears and you can use your original for assembly purposes. As the stained glass is being cut each piece of glass will be numbered the same as the corresponding pattern piece.

Copper foil pattern shears are recommended when cutting your pattern since the three blades automatically cut away the space needed to compensate for the thickness of the foil which allows your stained glass to fit together properly.

Many beginners prefer to cut and foil wrap a few pieces of stained glass at a time which allows the pattern to be adjusted in case of cutting errors. Beginning with pattern piece number one and working consecutively place each cut piece of stained glass onto the pattern. It is helpful to dip the cutter wheel into lubricant after each cut to make the next cut easier.

As you become more familiar with the pattern cutting and as well as the stained glass cutting your projects will begin to become easier and more professional looking.
