Types of Stained Glass

With the ever popular interest in stained glass, their are numerous manufacturers of stained glass and stained glass products. With so many varieties of colors and textures to choose from, finding the right pieces for your project should not prove difficult. Prices of glass vary due to the manufacturing and processing methods used. Since precious materials are used in red and orange glass, prices are generally more expensive for these colors.

There are two main types of stained glass, one is called machine-made glass and the other is called antique glass.

Machine-made glass is a much more economical product and can be easily identified by it's color, thickness and patterns. Another term for machine-made glass is "cathedral glass" which is a single colored glass available in both smooth and textured sheets. There are a number of assorted colors, textures and patterns that machine-made glass can be found in. Depending on the manufacturer sheet sizes do vary.

Full antique glass is historically known as "hand blown" glass and is formed by the mouth-blown cylinder method. Thickness, tones and textures vary in each sheet of antique glass, which is also easy to cut. Antique glass is much more costly and is made in smaller sheets than machine-made glass. Antique glass is usually transparent with intense colors.

Semi-antique glass is manufactured similar to antique glass but is blown by compressor with the sheets being much larger. Machine-made antique glass looks like full antique glass but it's colors are not as brilliant and costs substantially less.
